Comparison is a Joy Killer

Growing up, I always looked up to the true GOAT himself, Kobe Bryant aka the Black Mamba

🐍

. His hustle, persistency, determination, love, and obsession in his pro basketball career led him to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

I wanted to be just like him.

However, the difference between him and I was that I didn't pursue basketball as my career or continue to play basketball as my main sport.

I went from playing basketball on the court as a point guard to dancing on stage as a performer. I found my own obsession and love in dance just like how Kobe had it with basketball.

2003 Porsche 911 GT3 Versus 1990 C300 Benz

Two classic, luxurious, and beautiful cars but different in their own way. I like to believe that one isn't better than the other but just as great as the other. Doesn't matter what year they are, they are just both beautifully made things.

I like to think of the similarity with KB. Us being two different kinds of people but with the same uniqueness and beauty of how we're made, with passion, patience, and all of the in between.

I'm a fan of both but if I had to choose, Porsche would be the move

Comparing Yourself to Others

What It Does to You

  • Makes you feel like you're not good enough which isn't true
  • Feeds the ego if comparing yourself to others that may not be as successful to you
  • Resentment of others that are more successful than you
  • Unhappy even when you achieve accomplishments

How to Overcome It

  • Count your blessings, not your problems
  • Acknowledging what you're good at doing already aka your strengths
  • Accepting that you're not the best at everything and that's okay
  • Staying in your own lane and focusing on your own path to success

STAY THE COURSE

Cancelling Out the "Noise"

Easier said than done, right? I can admit, I definitely get carried away at times and no doubt, you have too. It's summer I get it; the late night parties, Vegas trips, multiple summer holidays, etc., but you cannot lose sight of your end goal!

THE ULTIMATE GOAL

The main reason why you started in the first place.

Continue on that same path because you've changed and have changed A LOT. In a good way!

There's no reason to quit now. Like the great Joe Holder said,

"Rest if you must, but don't quit."

Rest necessarily doesn't mean not to enjoy times with friends or family when its needed but if it becomes a consistent thing, then that's when that "noise" starts to get louder.

Control that volume of the noise & make the right decision that's best for you.
