How Do You Prepare For Your Workouts?
Preparation can truly mean making the right decisions before the ultimate task at hand. It's setting yourself up for success with lowering the chances of mistakes or worse, failure. So in that case, if you were to perform at peak performance for a workout, how do you prepare for it?
With this week's newsletter, let's talk about the do's and don'ts of how to approach your workouts and how to transform a sh*tty workout into a decent one.
The Do's & Don'ts
First off, I want to let you know that you are more than capable of creating a new plan for yourself if your current plan and preparation isn't the most ideal. I want to help you take out the guess work and have you not waste any more time than to try too many methods to where you burn yourself out.
Disclaimer, this is not a one size fits all approach so take all the advice that you need.
Here are the Do's:
- Plan out your week of lifts ahead of time to minimize the confusion on what you're trying to accomplish each training session. With little to no planning, you're going to waste more time than you think if you're going to find what machine is most available. In addition, this planning can help you understand peak times of when the gym is busy so you're not waiting for a bench or machine for 10+ minutes.
- Pack your gym clothes the night before. This helps you save energy rather than having to find a gym fit. Believe it or not, your brain is more at work and that energy could be saved and used more into much difficult tasks that require more energy and brain power.
- Prepare your pre- and post-workout meals. Understand that your workout needs to be fueled properly. Without proper fuel for the effort that you will be doing, whether that's light exercise or more strenuous, I've seen it first hand that you will most likely 'hit a wall' and your energy may crash resulting into a shortened workout session and leaving the gym feeling defeated.
Here are the Don'ts:
- Don't let outside circumstances come with you to the gym. What I mean by this is when we have a bad day or you're going through rough times, it's best to not bring that in with you into your session. I know some people use this as 'fuel' for their workouts but I recommend you walk into the gym clear minded. Once you're done with your session, you can worry about that stuff once you leave. In fact, majority of the time people feel a lot better after and can take on their life challenges more logically and strategically.
- Don't forget about your headphones! I typically train with headphones to get into my flow state in training sessions.
WHEN THIS HAPPENS
If you're halfway through the workout,
And the lifts don't feel the greatest, don't stop there. Keep working through with what you can do. Not every session will be your best lift.
It's all about showing up and finishing what you started. From start to finish.
