Is Strength & Resistance Training the Key to Longevity?

There has been plenty of research that has been studied across these two but yet, people have not yet made the decision to incorporate it into their lifestyle. Why is that?

With this week's newsletter, I want to give you insight about why strength training and resistance training are so vital to us and on top of that, provide you some of the best ways to implement it today.

Recent studies suggest

Resistance training can help reverse muscle loss, helps increase your resting metabolic rate, lowers your overall body fat, facilitates physical function, lowers the chances of getting diabetes (particularly, Type II Diabetes), improves cardiovascular health, improves bone mineral density, and importantly, reverses aging factors.

And not only does it help us physically but on top of that, mentally as well

🧠

I bet you no one has ever said to themselves right after a workout that they regret working out.

Or let's take it back it to a time when you showed up to a workout session that you were hesitant on doing but you did it anyway, how did you feel after?

More awake, feeling like you can take on more tasks in the day, happier, etc.?

I hope so because that's exactly what it feels like.

And what if you consistently did it for the next 21-100 days? To ideally form a habit, it takes about that amount of time.

Imagine how you would feel after that.

Taking the next steps

So, if at this point I've convinced you enough to start, here are a few ways to gradually start implementing it into your routine:

  • Make your workout accessible. This is for my beginners and especially on-and-off peeps that can't seem to have the routine stick. If you think the gym is way too intimidating to start in, go out and buy a workout mat, some new workout clothes that you feel good in, a few resistance bands and kettlebells on Amazon, and download any workout app that you find appealing. Then, go ahead and search up '10-15 Minute Bodyweight Workout'. There will definitely be options to choose from and you're set.
  • Find a friend(s) that's also interested in starting resistance training and have you both purchase a gym pass. What's not to love when you're doing something difficult with someone you trust? Your support system really does play a factor but you both each have to promise each other to stick to it because if one isn't fully in, you're both are at risk.
  • Join a strength & conditioning class and start fresh. Maybe you like working out with a group. This may be similar in working out with a friend but a bit out of your comfort zone if you go in not knowing anyone. BUT, the beauty in this is meeting new people & making new connections.
  • Use your resources. Watch any youtube gym videos, explore Instagram gym community, or pull up Tik Tok gym fyp (For You Page) and you may get to see a ton of inspiration from many people. I use this as a tool so don't doom scroll and be mindful of the amount of information you take in and check it's validity.
  • Get cleared for training from your doctor or assess yourself with a Certified Personal Trainer or your Physical Therapist. It's better to know your body before you go into it blindly. You'll have the right guidance that you need in order to perform exercises that you'd like to do with safe and proper technique.
