Travel Smart, Train Smarter: Fitness on the Move

It's that time of the year again! Christmas is coming up in just a few days and some of you may be scrambling trying to catch a break with last minute Christmas shopping and traveling from one destination to another to visit and spend time with loved ones.

And if you're an athlete like myself, you're probably wondering how do you even make time for the gym to stay on top of your training regimen or stick to your scheduled group classes that you normally attend to every week?

For this week's newsletter, I want to help you navigate through these busy times and to ultimately maintain the momentum you're building for yourself for the new year.

Travel Smart

If you plan to be traveling out of town or state, here are a few tips to be active on the move.

  1. Make movement a non-negotiable. When we think 'active', we think we have to be in a specific setting to sweat and train hard. However, since you will be in a completely different environment, the best way to stay active is by doing the bare minimum. For example, if you're in a waiting area, you can do bodyweight mobility and/or strength exercises like squats, single leg split squats, hip mobilization, Neck/Shoulder CARs (controlled articulated rotations), to get the body limber before sitting on a long trip.
  2. An accessible gym at or nearby where you're staying. This is where you want to do a little research before you set those traveling plans. I would always make sure where I'm staying at has a gym within its building or nearby. Additionally, you want to have this gym to have enough to work with because although hotels may have gyms, sometimes they are either neglected or have very little equipment to use.
  3. Packing mobile exercise equipment. If you have extra space in your luggage or backpack, bring a resistance band that are light and compact or running/training shoes. This gives you no excuse to miss a workout on wherever you travel to.
  4. Carry a reusable water flask. Most of the time when you are always on the go, you might forget to drink water and your thirst will go unnoticed until you reach the end of the day. I'd recommend carrying at least a 32 oz reusable flask so that you don't always have to refill it so often. This is especially for my people who travel by plane; being in a plane cabin is very dehydrating so it's ideal to have this as one of your travel essentials.

Train Smarter

To train smarter is to understand that when you are cut off from resources or you just happen to not have enough of what you are needing, it all comes down to maintenance.

It wouldn't make sense to go chasing after hitting PRs (personal records) or having a workout that may feel as difficult as if you were to have such equipment and that's okay.

If you at least stay active in any way possible and focus on doing what you can do versus what you can't do, then you're going to be absolutely fine. This is proof that you're dedicated and disciplined and if you can carry those habits through the holidays, best believe once you get back, it won't be as hard to fall back into routine again.

Do the best that you can during the holidays and enjoy it because these times always go by so quickly.
