What Do You Do When Sh*t Hits the Fan?
Ever prepared for something so well; that somehow sh*t still doesn't go according to plan? We've all been there at some point in our life. In that case, how do you go about it if this happens? Do you panic and let your emotions take over? Or do you take a deep breath, stay calm, and figure out how to make the whole situation work in your favor?
With this week's newsletter, I want to guide you on how to manage yourself during times of turmoil whether their sudden moments or if it's an entire phase that you go through.
Taming the Fire
It's obvious to not panic during these times because not only do we not think clearly making everything way worse than it is.
I've been reflecting on my day before race day from the LBC Half Marathon and I remember that the night before was completely different than any other night.
What was so different from recent nights going into it were that 1) I slept way earlier than I usually do, 2) my partner wasn't next to me because she was out late that night, and 3) I was finding every scenario of what could go wrong versus what could go right on race day.
All in all, I was going in blindly since this was my very first official race and I didn't know how to mentally prepare myself. My anxiety was starting to kick in
So what I did that night was:
- Just breathe. I took a big, deep breath and breathed. AND not involuntarily but actively focused on my breath. Usually during these turbulent moments, our breathing is sped up and our heart is beating out of our chest. Solely, our job is to make sure we don't let things start to get out of control. So, take control of your breath & start from there.
- Accept. I knew that this is my first ever big race and I had to keep telling myself that it was normal to feel this way and that everything was going to be okay.
- Analyze the situation. Once I asked myself why I was feeling like this and why everything is going into shambles in the moment, it helped me realize and made these thoughts more tangible. I figured it was only during this moment because of the different factors that were in place that night.
- Strategize. I then figured my way out of the situation by convincing myself that if I didn't fall sleep any time soon I wouldn't have supple energy the following day. So, the whole goal was just to fall sleep and imagine if this was a normal night rather than the night before race day.
- Execute. Eventually, the moment had passed because of my thoughts shifting in a more controlled state. I was then able to fall sleep.
TAKE CONTROL & EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
Taking Control No Matter What the Circumstances Are
I didn't believe that the-day-before-the-race jitters were an actual thing and I believe that's where I fell short and felt I had no control throughout the first half of the night. Then, I followed through with that whole process and it helped me focus and ultimately, take control of the whole situation.
Life is always going to throw curve balls and I can speak on it even on race day and I how I managed to get through it as how I planned. I prepared well enough and rolled with whatever was out of my control by focusing on what was in my control. I didn't let a moment go to waste and preparing for the unexpected was the plan.
The rest was history
TAKEAWAYS
The whole takeaway here is that there is always a way to maneuver through tough times, whether that'd be in the moment or where your life may be at in general.
Maybe you're not hitting the gym consistently like you planned to because your days have gotten busier or you just don't find the urge to.
Or maybe you had a big ambitious goal in mind beginning of this year and you were in the works of performing that goal but you got carried away with other things that needed to be catered to.
What matters is what you do now. Start with taking a big deep breath and go from there.
The process I mentioned wasn't engrained until I practiced it consistently and I applied it every time things didn't go as planned.
But eventually as you apply this process in your own life, you'll be at that point where everything will go your way.
