What Gets Measured Gets Managed

Whether you're a busy professional, an artist athlete, or a hybrid athlete, I believe in some way, shape, or form, there are different versions of the way you track things. For business professionals, you might be using an Apple watch to track your steps per day. Or if you're a dancer, you might use choreo videos as a way to see how you performed a piece from a dance class that you've recently taken. Even for hybrid athletes, like myself, you more so track your workouts with PRs & AMRAPs to see how much muscular strength and endurance you are building over time.

With a ton of metrics to choose from, I want to provide you why we tend to track, what these numbers and statistics do for us, and if you don't necessarily track anything purposefully, give you reasons why you should start tracking.

Tracking at Your Advantage

We tend to track things because it allows us to take control, provides us clarity, and builds up motivation toward achieving our goals, whatever they may be.

And here’s why tracking is incredibly effective:

  1. Clarity and Awareness: Monitoring your nutrition, steps, sleep, cardio sessions, & workouts gives you a clear picture of your current habits each day of the week. Ultimatley, this awareness is the first step towards meaningful change.
  2. Motivation and Accountability: Seeing your own progress in real-time boosts motivation and keeps you accountable as well. Small wins, like hitting your caloric intake goal of the day or staying consistent with workouts, builds momentum.
  3. Personalized Adjustments: Tracking allows us to identify what's working well and more importantly, what needs improvement. You can tailor your own fitness plan to meet your goals and cater to your personal lifestyle.
  4. Injury Prevention and Recovery: This is especially important for my dancers and hybrid athletes. Tracking your workouts and planning out your recovery routines helps prevent overtraining and lessens the chances of injuries.
  5. Long-Term Success: Consistency is key. Tracking builds sustainable habits that lead to lasting results.

HOW TO IMPLEMENT

Simple Ways to Start Tracking

Use fitness apps at your disposal. What I typically use are Nike Running Club app to track my pace each run, the lengths of each run, and how many runs I do per month; MyFitnessPal to monitor my caloric intake per day whether that's hitting my protein goal of the day or visually seeing how much sugar I consume in a day; and last not but not least, the Whoop app which is connected to my Whoop wristband. This last one in particular has been helping me keep track of my sleep, recovery, and strain per day.

Additionally, this goes to my next point; wear a fitness tracker to monitor steps and activity levels. Investing in this technology gives you much more insight and you can visually see how well or, in some cases, unwell your body is performing.

Lastly, utilize a workout journal to note progress and feelings after each session. I personally use my Notes App to create a workout plan for myself. It gives me structure but also the freedom to play around with new exercises & training methods to incorporate for future clients.
